February 12, 2016 – UTA Energy Systems Research Center Speaks on Battery Storage
February 12, 2016 @ 11:45 am - 1:00 pm
For our February meeting, the DEC is happy to welcome David Alan Wetz, Jr., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, UT Electrical Engineering Dept. Dr. Wetz will update us on the current state of battery storage and its importance to micro grids and related projects at the Energy Systems Research Center. More information to come regarding Dr. Wetz’s presentation.
Dr. David Wetz was born in El Paso, Texas in 1982. He received the B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Texas Tech University in 2003. He also earned the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 2004 and 2006 respectively. During his tenure at Texas Tech, he worked as an undergraduate and graduate Research Assistant in the Center for Pulsed Power and Power Electronics where his research was focused in the areas of pulsed power system design, pulsed dielectric breakdown of liquids, and ion thruster optimization. He was recognized as the IEEE 2006 Pulsed Power Student of the Year. Upon graduation in 2006, he became a member of the research staff at the Institute for Advanced Technology (IAT) at the University of Texas at Austin as a Postdoctoral Fellow and later as a Research Associate. While employed there, his work was focused on advancing the development of electromagnetic launch systems. In 2008 he was recognized as an Outstanding Young Researcher at the 2nd Euro Asian Pulsed Power Conference in Vilnius, Lithuania. In August of 2010, he joined the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Arlington as an Assistant Professor. Since joining UTA, his research has been focused in the areas of pulsed power, MicroGrid design and optimization, and understanding the limitations of using electrochemical energy storage devices in pulsed power systems.
