Dec 9th – Energy and Environmental Sustainability at Toyota’s New Plano Headquarters

Our December guest speaker will be David Absher, Manager Environmental Sustainability, Toyota Motor North America. He will provide us with an overview of Toyota’s sustainability strategy, design considerations and aspirations for the Plano HQ project, key project elements that have been incorporated into the design and a more detailed overview of water management and energy features of the site, including the solar energy application. He will also inform us of the future goals for the site.
David Absher is a native of Kentucky. Mr. Absher is the Senior Manager for Toyota Motor North American Environmental Sustainability, a position held since August 2012. He is responsible for the development of strategies and tactical solutions to support Toyota’s environmental goals for all Toyota entities in North America, and is an active participant in the coordination and development of Toyota’s global environmental action plans. Mr. Absher is currently the Manager of the Sustainability Team providing input for the design and development of the new Toyota Motor North America headquarters that is being built in Plano, Texas.
Prior to that Mr. Absher was the Manager of Environmental Engineering, Energy Management, and Maintenance Coordination for Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky Inc. (TMMK), located in Georgetown, Kentucky. He was responsible for the development and management of all environmental and energy programs and environmental regulatory compliance at the site. Mr. Absher was the energy manager for TMMK from 1997 until 2012.
Mr. Absher worked 20 years in the Facilities Control Department prior to moving to the Environmental Engineering Department at TMMK, and was the Manager of Facilities and Utility and Energy Management at TMMK, responsible for all aspects of Facility management for the 1300 acre site and 7.8 million square feet of building areas. During this period Mr. Absher participated in the first North American Toyota eco-plant design for the Baja California, Mexico plant. Mr. Absher was then assigned for 3 years as the owner’s representative for the build and startup of the plant, and was responsible for the start-up of all Engineering and Maintenance Departments.
Mr. Absher served on the Governor’s panel to develop the Kentucky Climate Action Plan in 2009, and is currently an Advisory Board Member for the Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky.
