May 11, 2018 – Microgrids: Oncor Electric
May 11, 2018 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
On May 11th Randy will provide us with an overview of the Oncor microgrid (Lancaster, TX), with emphasis on: (a) on-Grid site Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and load management and (b) off-Grid (i.e., ‘islanded’) operations. He will discuss demonstrations of interactive remote monitoring and control of the microgrid assets and provide inform us about Grid evolution trends, such as: increasing consumer-owned DER such as solar power and Electric Vehicles (EVs); EV charging infrastructure (including ‘superchargers’); energy storage; broader participation in the power market by DER and/or microgrids; and the potential impacts of these technologies and products on Texas’ ERCOT-managed Grid.
As Strategy & Technology Manager at Oncor, Randy is Operations manager for the SOSF microgrid, and lead for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Use Case studies conducted with those resources. He is relatively new to the power industry; previously 34 years in Defense electronics as project Lead Engineer, Sr. Systems Engineer, R&D project Principal Investigator, and Program Manager. Randy has an emphasis in man-machine symbiotics and artificial intelligence, with applications in multi-sensor systems, Command & Control, Intelligence, and man-machine interfaces. His professional career started in the UT system, conducting psychophysiological studies of cognition via anything that could be physically measured … EEG, EMG, EOG, GSR, xenon tomography, blood and brain chemistry, etc.. Randy has authored papers in DER management and microgrids, artificial intelligence, distributed real-time simulation, EEG and functional lateralization of the cortex, electrophysiology of the eye, human factors, human/robotic interfaces, psychopharmacology, psychophysiology, and statistics.
He is a lover of the outdoors, and promoting that love in children, including exposure to the scientific underpinnings and community responsibilities that come with that appreciation. Randy is active in both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and with the City of Allen, EarthX, and other local environmental outreach groups.
