Space-Based Solar Power: unlimited clean energy from space
Nobody’s ever heard of it. That sounds like science-fiction!
The concept of Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) is to provide utility-scale, unlimited, clean energy – from space – to designated locations around the Earth. This concept was previously known by the terms Solar Power Satellites (SPS) or Space Solar Power (SSP). Over five decades of efficiency improvements in solar cells and in wireless power transmission, as well as significant reductions in solar cell development costs and rocket launch costs, in addition to newer technologies such as additive manufacturing, have been converging to the point that SBSP satellites that historically only existed as artwork, then only as PowerPoints, are on the verge of becoming actual hardware operating in space. Could the solution to minimizing the challenges associated with climate change and with the world’s dependence on fossil fuels, come from a space technology?
At his day job, Ken Ruffin has an over 25 year career in air quality inspections, permitting and compliance, and is currently a Senior Environmental Engineer at American Electric Power (AEP). However, on many evenings and weekends, Ken serves as the President of the National Space Society of North Texas (NSS-NT) which is the National Space Society (NSS) chapter for the DFW Metroplex and beyond. NSS-NT has monthly meetings which include presentations on space history and/or the latest information in space travel. North Texas residents of all ages who are interested in NASA and Commercial Spaceflight activities are encouraged to visit a NSS-NT meeting, and perhaps consider joining the winner of the 2014, 2016, and 2019 NSS Chapter of the Year Awards (#1 NSS Chapter in the world for public outreach). Additionally, NSS-NT is the host chapter for the 39th annual International Space Development Conference (ISDC 2020) at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Dallas Frisco Hotel and Convention Center, from May 28-31, 2020. Keynote speakers include astronauts, as well as space executives, engineers, and scientists. For “space enthusiasts” in North Texas and beyond, both the monthly NSS-NT meetings and the annual ISDCs are occasions you do not want to miss!
